How to Your Sell Photos

by Diane Kelly

Photography jobs are few and very hard to get but you can sell your photos as stock on the internet. What that means is you take images that you think are well composed and well lit and upload them on a website that handles that type of photograph. Search for stock photography for examples. Istock for instance is just one.

Stock houses are theme based and will specialize in people or animals for instance. They will have their own specialty of what they are looking for in an image. Check around for the house that specializes your kind of photo images.

All photographers are not an Ansel Adams especially not a beginner. Equipment can make a big difference. Get good equipment! That is, do not break the bank but get the best that you can afford. I don’t guess I have to tell you that film is dead so go strictly digital. Nikon, Olympus and Canon offer some very good and very expensive camera bodies and lenses. If you are willing learn what you are doing it can be worth it.

A light meter is often very helpful to have. It is not a primary purchase but one that you might want as your skill improves. Don’t rely on all the automatic gizmos in the cameras. They often do not allow for tricky situations that composition and weather can throw at you. Learning how light falls and fills in is a very big part of professional photography.

Check out areas where to commonly go everyday for photo locations. Keep in mind they need to be easy to get in and out of for the subject. A bride to be will not be too thrilled with her portrait when her freelance photographer has walked her through a gully. You probably will not make money that way.

Lessons are a good step to take so ask anyone you know that knows about photography. Community colleges offer classes and a group situation could teach you a lot. Shoot constantly with your equipment. The more intimate you are with your gear the more knowledgeable you will become. You could even get good at photography.

A stock house will usually ask for your copyright meaning that you are paid once for multiple uses of your image. You don’t make money like that but you will like what you are doing and that counts for a lot.

Of greatest importance is shoot photos. As they say, don’t leave home without it. Bring it to the zoo, to the country and to the beach. Sunsets are a gas and so are sunrises and you cannot believe what marvelous images can be made during those times. Keep on taking photos and have fun.
