How can I reduce my bankruptcy lawyer fees?

by Josh Ramos

Are you thinking of declaring bankruptcy but are worried about the possible consequences? There are many drawbacks to choosing this option, even though it can be necessary in many cases. One thing that many people worry about in this situation is whether they cannot afford to pay their lawyer.

Well, the first thing you should remember is that declaring bankruptcy will help you with your other debts, which will make it easier to pay your legal fees. The bankruptcy automatic stay puts a freeze on all of your debts so your creditors cannot even contact you.

Of course, if your bankruptcy case goes well, then you stand a good chance of getting rid of all of your debt. Without this previous debt load to worry about, paying your lawyer should seem much easier.

Even so, most people aren’t too excited about having to spend any money on lawyer fees, especially when they’re trying to reestablish their financial future. Is there any solution to that annoying legal bill?

Believe it or not, one thing you can do to try to lower your bill is to go in to the lawyer’s office as prepared as possible. If you’ve already done your homework on the basic issues of bankruptcy, you won’t have to spend as much time with your lawyer (and this can actually lower your bill because your lawyer will be doing less work).

Do as much reading as you can on the subject so you understand what’s involved. Also, make sure that you understand your own situation.

Know where you stand with regards to your monthly bills and overall debt load. As much as you may hate it, you need to drag out all of your statements and add up the damage, so to speak, before you do anything else. It is critical to know your starting point if you’re ever to reach the finish line.

Doing all this research beforehand will give you a good idea of where you stand and whether you really need bankruptcy. If you do decide to file, you’ll be much more informed and prepared about the entire process.
