Applying for a Social Security Number

by Rob G Smith

Social security number is important in the United States to be able to live peacefully. It is also required if you apply for different kinds of things like credit card or even if you apply for a new job. Employers may have a need for you to disclose it for the company’s security purposes. Not all of us have been issued an ssn maybe because the documents that we have submitted were not authentic, information we gave the agency is not correct or maybe because we just don’t know how to get one.

There are a number of documents that the agency requires before you can be able to apply and these documents must not be photocopies nor only notarized. These documents must be authentic.

If you have not been issued a number before or you need an original card, you must provide the agency your correct age, identity and citizenship or lawful alien status.

You may need a duplicate of your card for a number of reasons, in this case, you must show any proof of identity, and if you were born outside the United States, you should also provide your citizenship proof or lawful alien status.

If you just newly got married or got divorced and your name has been changed, you need to have your card corrected and the documents needed are proof of identification that has your old name and same with the aforementioned, citizenship status proof.

For proof of age, birth certificate is required. But further credentials are also accepted like hospital records prior to reaching the age of 5 or a religious record that was released before you were 3 months old like baptismal certificate, perhaps.

There are a number of valid identifications accepted like driver’s license, company or employer ID, passport, military records and many others. Health cards are also accepted. Remember that Medicare card is different from health insurance card and Medicare cards are not accepted.

Remember that you are dealing with a sovereign government agency so you are definitely assured that all your personal information and your documents are held in the strictest possible confidentiality.
